Porcelain Dolls
by
Edna Hibel : Artist and Doll Maker
Edna Hibel's love of dolls began when she was nine. At that time, she got such a bad case of chicken pox that she had to stay in bed for some time. To pass the hours and to try to keep contact with her playmates during her confinement, the young doll maker would make dolls by hand and show them out the window to her admiring friends.
Edna Hibel’s love of dolls continued in her professional life when she introduced her first porcelain dolls in 1985. Besides porcelain dolls, she experimented with wax and wood dolls. Alas, the demand for her paintings and original stone lithography became too great for her to continue as doll maker, and so the porcelain doll "Amy Rebecca goes to Russia" is her last doll in the collection.
A Magical Story of Amy Rebecca – An All American Girl Doll
This porcelain doll is based on a teenage American girl Edna Hibel knew. As her lifelong dream to go to Ireland was about to become a reality, Hibel’s first porcelain doll of this girl showed her in an Irish dress. The porcelain doll sold out quickly. The girl's next dream was to go to Russia...so Edna Hibel captures her here in Russian attire.
The "Amy Rebecca goes to Russia" porcelain doll symbolizes the independent and lively spirit of America's teenagers, ready to discover the world. This American girl doll makes a perfect gift for an all-American girl.
